What sciatica actually is
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. Sciatica is the pain pattern that happens when something presses on that nerve where it begins in the lower back.
A herniated or bulging disc is the most common cause. The disc pushes out and presses on the nerve root. Spinal stenosis, a tight muscle in the buttock or a bone spur can also press on it.
Sciatica is often confused with ordinary low back pain. The difference is that sciatica travels down the leg, while ordinary low back pain stays in the back.

The pattern to look for is pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and runs down the back of one leg, sometimes with numbness, tingling or weakness in that leg. It is usually on one side. It can feel sharp, burning or like an electric shock.
